Jozani Forest Reserve
Country(s): Zanzibar |
JOZANI FOREST RESERVE - ZANZIBAR Zanzibar’s protected Reserve Jozani Forest in the centre of Zanzibar is roughly 44 sq km, that’s just like 3% of the whole island. It is 24 km southeast of Stone Town - an easy stop-off en route to the east coast beaches.
Jozani Forest reserve contains large mangrove swamp and a tract of natural forest that is home the highly endangered Red Colobus Monkey species and is only found here in Zanzibar’s Jozani Forest. The other monkeys found here include; Sykes monkey, bush babies, animals like d uikers, hyraxes, over 50 species of butterfly and 40 species of birds. It’s also rumoured to be the stomping ground of the rare Zanzibar leopard - so rare in fact that few people have claimed to have seen it, and the last sighting was several years ago. On one side of the road the trees are younger and shorter so you can see the monkeys, as they are used to people visiting including the rare Red Colobus Monkey. On the other side of the road, in the older forest, huge mahogany trees grow high and the Colubus live at the top where the shoots are newest, they cannot be spotted easily. The reserve is completely managed by the local people who operate tree nurseries and act as rangers and guides. From the visitors' centre on the main road to the south, there’s a 45-minute nature trail accompanied by a knowledgeable guide into the beautiful and very peaceful forest. Also Jozani forest is growing on coral and again uniquely there are mangrove swamps nearby, all of which can be visited. One may need a whole hour or two if possible early in the morning since that when most of the monkeys are active. Inquire about Jozani Forest Tour | Stone Town Tour | Zanzibar info |Zanzibar Hotels
