Ngorongoro Crater - TanzaniaTanzania Info | Tanzania safari Packages | Tanzania Top Attractions
The Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area located 180 km an average of two and half hours drive west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania . The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District in Tanzania .
The Ngorongoro Crater, a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera was formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, is 610 m (2,000 ft) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi). Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from fifteen to nineteen thousand feet (4500 to 5800 metres) high. As to the surprise of many the Ngorongoro Crater habours wild animals on its floor including the big five (Elephants, Lions, Leopard, Buffallos and Rhinos) but there are no impalas, topis, oribis, giraffes and crocodiles. However, breeding of animals on the crater floor is becoming difficult with many genetic problems passed from generation to generation. This is due to the very small amount of migration from outside the crater walls to enter the local gene pool, with very few animals migrating to enter the crater floor. Did you know that Ngorongoro Crater has a lake at the floor? The seasonal salt lake at the center of the Crater commonly known as L. Magadi has flamingos coming in seasonally also.
